WHITE FILLING COMPOSITE MATERIALS
Used for: Small and large fillings, in front and back teeth or the visible parts of teeth.
Costs: More than Amalgam, but less than Gold & Ceramic
The Composite resins have become stronger and more resistant to wear. Your fillings will match the color of your teeth. A filling can be completed in one dental visit.
Composite fillings can bond directly to the tooth, making the tooth stronger than it would be with an Amalgam filling. Less drilling is involved than with Amalgam fillings because your Dentist does not have to shape the space as much to hold the filling securely. The bonding process holds the composite resin in the tooth. Composite resin can be used in combination with other materials, such as Glass Ionomer, to provide the benefits of both materials. Composites can also be repaired with Composites so that in case a tooth or an existing restoration is damaged, only that part needs repairing with the same strength without cutting a healthy tooth or an existing good filling unnecessarily.
Nowadays, there are a variety of Composite materials available with which your Dentist can restore a whole tooth; even a more complex back tooth by following a precise procedure and technique.
They are durable enough to withstand chewing forces. Placing such direct restorations although more complex is a breakthrough in Conservative Dentistry.
Your Dentist can delay or even avoid crowning your tooth by preserving your tooth enamel which furthermore leads to protecting the nerve of your tooth by providing minimally invasive treatment.
There is less cost and treatment for you involved compared to having a Crown, where more cutting of tooth as well as involvement of a laboratory is required.
Not all teeth are suitable for a Direct Composite Restoration ( e.g. following Root Canal Treatment on a back tooth) and each case will be carefully assessed by your Dentist who then will discuss with you alternative options.
Composite resin is technique sensitive. It may shrink when placed. However, the shrinkage is reduced when your Dentist places this type of filling in layers which will take more time.
Each layer is then cured or hardened, with a special bright blue light before the next layer can be added. This process makes the tooth stronger, but can lengthen the time of your dental appointment.
This more superior material, increased time and labor involved contribute to the higher cost (compared with Amalgam fillings).
Made of: Acrylic and a component of glass called fluoroaluminosilicate
Types: Traditional (the material sets without a bright light), and Resin-modified or Hybrid Composite (stronger than traditional Glass Ionomer; a bright blue light is used to set the material)
Used for: Most commonly used as cementation for Inlay fillings, but Glass Ionomer also is used for fillings in front teeth or to fill areas around the necks of your teeth or on roots. As filling material, Glass Ionomer is typically used in people with a lot of decay in the part of the tooth that extends below the gum (root caries). It is also used for filling baby teeth and as a liner for other types of fillings.
Glass Ionomer matches the color of the teeth, although it does not always match as well as composite resin. Resin-modified Glass Ionomer is usually a better match than traditional Glass Ionomer. In some cases, no drilling is needed to place a Glass Ionomer filling. This makes this type of filling useful for small children.
Glass Ionomers release Fluoride, which can help protect the tooth from further decay.Glass Ionomer restorations bond (stick) to the tooth, which helps to prevent leakage around the filling and further decay.
Glass Ionomer materials are not as technique sensitive as Composites and can be placed as an alternative where Composite can not be placed to protect and stabilise your tooth for short or medium term for those who wish to avoid having a metal or Amalgam filling.
Traditional Glass Ionomer is significantly weaker than Composite resin. It is much more likely to wear or fracture.Traditional Glass Ionomer does not match your tooth color as precisely as Composite resin. If you are getting a Resin-modified Glass Ionomer filling, each thin layer needs to be cured, or hardened, with a special bright blue light before the next layer can be added. This makes the tooth stronger, but can lengthen the time of your dental appointment.

They play an important role in dental health care and are mainly concerned with gum health , showing people correct home care and applying protective materials to the teeth and gums .
The hygienist’s main role is to professionally clean the teeth for the patient . This is usually called scaling and polishing . However , perhaps their most important role is showing the patient the best way to keep the teeth free of plaque . Plaque is a soft, sticky white / yellow build up around the teeth which can cause dental decay and bleeding gums unless it is removed regularly. It can also cause bad breath (halitosis).
Hygienists also give advice on diet and ways to prevent dental decay . The hygienist will work with your dentist to provide care tailored to your needs .
Not all practices have a hygienist, however , more of them now offer this as part of the service to patients , using part time and full-time hygienists . Hygienists can now work when a dentist is not there , as long as the patient has been seen by the dentist and the treatment is prescribed for the patient .

ROOT CANAL TREATMENTS
Inside the enamel (hard outer shell of the tooth) , there is a secondary protection layer called dentine . Inside the dentine is a specific area called the pulp or nerve chamber . The pulp chamber contains blood vessels and nerves to provide nutrients for the tooth .
Inside the enamel (hard outer shell of the tooth) , there is a secondary protection layer called dentine . Inside the dentine is a specific area called the pulp or nerve chamber . The pulp chamber contains blood vessels and nerves to provide nutrients for the tooth .
If your tooth’s nerve chamber becomes infected by decay or damaged by injury , root canal treatment is often the only way to save your tooth as an alternative to removal of the tooth (extraction).
Deep cavities or trauma can damage or infect the nerve of the tooth (pulp). In such a case , the dentist removes the damaged or infected pulp and replaces it with a special filler which helps protect the rest of the tooth . This filler will probably last for a long time, however, there may be a flare up and you may need a new filling or a cap on the tooth . Without root canal treatment , the gum and bone around the tooth may become infected and a painful swelling / abscess may form .
Quick facts about root canal treatment :
You may need root canal treatment if you have :
- Pain or throbbing while biting .
- Pain when eating /drinking hot or cold beverages / foods .
- Deep cavity or injury that causes an infection in the bone .
- Colour change / darkening of the tooth.
- Swelling or /and pus discharge in nearby gum .

A denture is designed to fill in the gaps left by one or more missing teeth. It is either a plastic or metal plate with a number of false teeth attached to it.
If partial, it can clip onto some of your natural teeth via metal clasps, which hold it securely in place in your mouth. It can easily be unclipped and removed.
Your dentist will be able to take measurements of your mouth and order this for you, or you can see a qualified clinical dental technician, who can provide a full / partial denture for you directly after you have first seen your dentist for a treatment plan and certificate of oral health.
CROWNS AND BRIDGES

Crowns
A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a tooth . It is used to strengthen and protect your tooth structure . Crowns are either made of precious metal alone (Gold) or may be covered with ceramic to help them look natural. Alternatively, they can be fully in ceramic.
At MediKa Dental we offer a variety of different Crown materials. Please speak to your dentist to choose a crown material that suits your clinical needs.
Bridges
A dental bridge covers or “bridges” the gap between missing teeth.
After you lost a tooth , your dentist may suggest that you get a bridge . A bridge can keep your other teeth form moving out of place .
Once a bridge is placed , it works just like your natural teeth.
